Obituary For Edward J. Luther
Edward J. Luther
December 6, 1939 - October 15, 2025
Edward Joseph "Eddie" Luther, Jr., of Kennerdell, PA, a beloved brother, father, grandfather, veteran, pilot, teacher, civil servant, AFSCME member, outdoorsman, entrepreneur, thoroughbred handicapper, and wildcatter oilman, died peacefully on October 15th at the age of 84.
Eddie was born and grew up in Altoona. When he was a teenager, his family moved to a farm in East Carroll Township. He became an avid hunter, and while still in high school, he ran "Luther's Corners," a successful fruit market in Carrolltown, alongside his father.
During his first year at Lock Haven State College, Eddie was recruited for the U.S. Navy aviator program. He completed basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois, before advancing to Aviation Officer Candidate School (AOCS) at Pensacola, Florida, where he earned the rank of Ensign. Following his service, Eddie graduated from Saint Francis College and taught elementary school before transitioning into a career in government, serving as Secretary-Treasurer of Cambria Township for 17 years. After retiring, Eddie converted his beloved fishing camp on the Allegheny River into his full-time home and started his own business as an independent oil and gas leasing agent. He also took up genealogy and proudly traced his lineage directly back to Protestant reformer Martin Luther, with genealogists in Germany verifying and publishing his findings in the directory of Luther descendants.
Eddie is survived by his sister, Carol Zeman; sons, Joseph and John; grandchildren, Stella, Maxwell, and Theodore; and granddaughter, Cassandra (Coessans) Yost. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gladys (Louther), his father, Edward, Sr., and his brothers Lawrence and Donald.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, October 22, 2025 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Carrolltown by the Benedictine Fathers. Committal will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in St. Benedict.
The family requests that remembrances be made as donations to the National Psoriasis Foundation (www.psoriasis.org).
Arrangements are by Stevens Funeral Home, Carrolltown.
