Obituary For Robert Bender

Robert “Bob” Bender, 84, Williamsburg, VA, formerly of Carrolltown, passed away November 24, 2023. He was born August 1, 1939 in Carrolltown, the son of Herman and Nellie (Campbell) Bender. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Kirsten Bender; brothers, Dwayne, Chuck and Larry; sisters, Nellie Lou Graney and Norma Schmidt. He is survived by and deeply missed by his wife of 58 years, Carol (Recchia) Bender; daughter, Lisa (Ron) Kincaid; grandchildren: Chelsea, Anna and Bailey; sisters in law: Linda (Chris) Snyder; Leanne (Chris) Langwill and their families. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends from Carrolltown. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Before attending college, Bob served in the Army. He attended St. Benedict Catholic School and was a graduate of John Carroll High School. Attended St. Francis College for his undergraduate degree, Indiana University for his masters and his Doctorate in Education from the University of Virginia and further studied at Harvard for his post doctorate studies. His career spanned many years as a superintendent of schools in both Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. After retirement he worked in his own consulting business in Virginia for many years. He was a member of three discussion groups, served as a volunteer at the Sentara Regional Hospital in Williamsburg, VA and worked on special projects around Virginia. He was an avid reader of Pulitzer Prize Winners; at the time of his death he was reading his 70th one. Bob was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Carrolltown was always home to Bob. A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 10:00 am St. Benedict Catholic Church, Carrolltown, by Rev. Michael Gabler, OSB. Interment church cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home, Inc., Carrolltown. Full military rites will be accorded by local veteran organizations.
